Men's Soccer Advances to America East Semifinals in PK Shootout

Goalkeeper Quantrell Jones makes an eighth round save, then scores to send UMBC onto UNH.

Stony Brook, N.Y. – The UMBC men's soccer team advanced to the semi-final round of the America East Championships, prevailing, 8-7, in a penalty kick shootout after a 1-1 double overtime draw.

UMBC senior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) played the starring role. In the shootout, he made a diving save on Bas Beckhoven's attempt in the eighth round. Then, Jones went to the spot himself and knocked the decider into the far left corner of the net.

Jones was brilliant over the last 65 minutes of play as the host Seawolves controlled the action. He made all six saves in that span, including a kick-out save on an SBU one-on-one opportunity just two minutes into overtime.

After a scoreless first half, UMBC junior back Julian Conze (Telgte, Germany) put the Retrievers in front, 1-0, in the 54'. The Seawolves were called for a handball on the right edge of the box and Conze buried the ensuing penalty kick.

But, just 63 seconds later, SBU tied the score. Jones was shielded from a serve into the box and the bounding loose ball deflected off a Retriever defender and past another on the line for an own goal.

Stony Brook shot first in the shootout, and seven Retrievers matched their conversions. The first four  were netted by Conze, Jackson Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.), Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.), and Hans Nesheim (Haugesund, Norway). With elimination staring them down, Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep), Nik Steiner (Baltimore, Md./Friends School), and William Forby (Velge, Denmark) all responded, setting the Round 8 drama up for Jones.

Fifth-seeded UMBC (8-7-3) will travel to Durham, N.H. and take on top-seeded, seventh-ranked and undefeated New Hampshire (15-0-2) on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
