Newark – The UMBC volleyball team (15-11) fell for the first time since Sept. 20, dropping a 3-0 decision to host Delaware.
The Retrievers had won ten straight matches, one shy of tying a school record.
Junior setter Andjelija Draskovic (Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia) continued her outstanding play, recording 32 assist in the three sets.
Freshman Mia Bliusic (Zagreb, Croatia) recorded seven of her team-high 11 kills in the second set.
HOW IT HAPPENED
·       The Blue Hens reeled off six consecutive points after the first set was tied at 11-all. A trio of kills by Bilusic narrowed the deficit to 21-19, but UD scored the final four points to take the set, 25-19.
·       UMBC hit well over .400 in the early stages of the second set, building a 17-11 lead. But UD took advantage of a spate of Retriever errors in a 12-4 run. UMBC would fight back to forge three late ties and fight off two set points, but the Blue Hens prevailed, 27-25.
·       Delaware never trailed in the third set, but UMBC cut an 18-12 deficit to 19-17 on a Draskovic kill. But the hosts scored the next four points and went to the victory. Â
UMBC plays its final regular season home match on Sunday, Nov. 7 when the UAlbany Great Danes visit the Chesapeake Arena. The match begins at 1:00 p.m. and will be preceded by a Senior Day ceremony.Â
