Esadah's Double-Double Not Enough as Late Rally Comes Up Short in Women's Basketball Loss at Richmond

Richmond, Va.-- Onome-Juliet Esadah (Warri, Delta State, Nigeria) had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, but a late rally fell short as the UMBC Women's Basketball team dropped a 76-64 decision at Richmond on Sunday afternoon. With the loss the Retrievers fall to 1-3, while the Spiders improved to 2-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Richmond jumped out to an early 24-13 after 10 minutes thanks to 16 first quarter points from Siobhan Ryan. Summers had five for UMBC while Esadah had four.
  • Jatarrikah Settle (Frederick, Md.) scored five of her eight points in the second, but Richmond continued its hot shooting as it went into the half up 49-31 thanks to shooting 19-34 overall including 10-18 from three.
  • At the half, Summers had nine and Esadah had eight.
  • The Spiders jumped out to a 21 point lead in the third, but UMBC went on a 9-0 run to cut the Richmond lead to 52-40 with just under five minutes left in the third.
  • But Richmond responded to push the lead back out to 16, but Settle and Esadah hit back-to-back baskets before the end of the quarter to make it a 64-51 Richmond lead going into the final 10 minutes.
  • UMBC cut the deficit 64-55 on a Summers jumper with just under nine minutes left, but the Retrievers would go scoreless for the next 5:08 as the Spiders kept them from getting any closer.
NOTABLE:
  • Alexia Nelson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with seven points, three rebounds, an assist and was a team best +5.
  • Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass.) and Danae Marquez (Fresno, Calif.) each had three assists, while Settle had a team-high five.
  • UMBC outrebounded Richmond, 45-32, and held a 22-7 advantage on the offensive glass

The Retrievers move on to the third game of their five game road-trip at Wake Forest on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
