BALTIMORE-- Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) scored her 1,000th career point, but Loyola used a big second half run to rally past the UMBC Women's Basketball team, 63-57, on Wednesday night at Reitz Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both teams struggled from the field in the first quarter, UMBC (1-2) went 4-18 from the field, while Loyola (2-2) went 5-15
- Summers scored five points in the first, including her 1,000th career point
- UMBC caught fire in the second quarter, shooting 8-14 from the field and 2-3 from three. UMBC used a late run and a buzzer-beating jumper from Loan-Anh Johnson (Wichita, Kan.) to take a 29-21 lead into the break
- The Retrievers continued their torrid shooting to start the third, jumping out to a 37-23 lead, but Loyola closed the quarter on a 19-3 run to take a 42-40 lead into the 4th.Â
- Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass.) scored the first six points of the fourth to keep the Retrievers within striking distance.
- Summers hit a three to cut the Loyola lead to 57-54 with 39.7 seconds left. Loyola went to the line and missed both free throws, but got the rebound and hit its next two.
- Dixon hit a long three to cut it to 59-57 with 27.1 left, but that's as close as UMBC would get as Loyola hit all of its free throws down the stretch.Â
- Loyola finished the game on a 40-20 run in the last 17:20
- The Greyhounds shot 17 free throws to UMBC's four, including a 13-2 advantage in the fourth
NOTABLE:
- Summers finished with a game-best 18 points and five rebounds.
- Dixon tallied 12 points, four assists, two rebounds and a steal
- Danae Marquez (Fresno, Calif.) made her first start as a Retriever and had three points, two assists and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Retrievers continue their five game road-swing at Richmond on Sunday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with top-off scheduled for 2 p.m.
