Swimming and Diving Opens Grueling Stretch at Navy on Saturday

UMBC women's and men's swimming and diving teams head to Annapolis to take on the United States Naval Academy squads on Saturday, Oct. 23.

The UMBC women's and men's swimming and diving teams head to Annapolis to take on the United States Naval Academy squads on Saturday, Oct. 23. The meets get underway from Legeune Hall at 11:00 a.m. and live results will be available through the Meet Mobile app.

For all fans wishing to attend the meet, Navy's COVID policy is that those who are not vaccinated need to wear a mask at all times and those who are vaccinated only need to wear one when inside. This goes for fans, coaches and athletes.

There is no fan shuttle bus. That means fans attending need to park outside of the USNA and walk through the Gate One security center.  A photo ID needs to be displayed to enter.  Those 17 and under need to be with an adult to gain access.

A LOOK BACK: The men opened the campaign on Oct. 2, hosting Johns Hopkins and Delaware.

Junior Will Henrickson (Ellicott City, Md) was UMBC's top diver, finishing first in the 3-meter with a score of 235.05. He finished third in the 1-meter with a score of 209.33.

Senior Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) won the Men's 1000 free for UMBC in a time of 9.33.89. He then took second in the Men's 500 Yard Free with a time of 4.43.97, behind teammate Samuel Jyawook (Franklin, Tenn.), who won with a time of 4.39.24.

HONORED: The America East Conference honored both Henrickson (Diver of the Week) and Wisner (Swimmer of the Week) with the first men's weekly awards of the 2021-22 campaign.

WE MEET AGAIN: UMBC and Navy have been constant combatants early in past seasons. In the last match-up on Oct. 11, 2019 at the UMBC Aquatic Complex, the 15th-ranked Midshipmen edged UMBC, 158-128. Senior Tiago Asakawa (Sumaré, Brazil) won the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 21.09.

NAVY, BRIEFLY: The Midshipmen are 2-1, opening with a loss at Penn State,  but cruising past locals Towson and Johns Hopkins.

UP NEXT: The Retrievers head back on the road next Saturday, Oct. 30 when they travel to Williamsburg, Va. to take on William & Mary. The dual meet starts at 2:00 p.m.
