BALTIMORE – UMBC freshman goalkeeper Abbey Cowles (Colts Neck, N.J.) has played 220 minutes on the turf at Retriever Soccer Park, has made 21 saves and has yet to allow a goal.
She stopped eight NJIT shots on goal this evening as the Retrievers and Highlanders played to a 0-0 double overtime draw before 821 fans at the park.
UMBC is now 5-6-3 overall and 1-4-1 in America East play, while NJIT moves to 4-10-1, 2-3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMBC possessed the ball for large segments of the first 30 minutes, outshot NJIT, 7-4, in the first half, but neither team created prime scoring chances.
- Retriever graduate student midfielder Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.) created a good chance in the 75', but her hard shot from a sharp right angle was knocked over the crossbar by NJIT netminder Molly Saylor.
- Cowles made a similar stop in the 85', denying Angela Harris by deflecting her drive over the crossbar.
- UMBC junior midfielder Juliana Rafaniello (Old Bridge, N.J.) directed two shots on goal in succession in the 88', but Saylor blocked both attempts.
- The game went to overtime and Stevenson nearly ended it in the 100', but her hooking and dipping direct kick from 30 yards out was parried over the crossbar by Saylor.
NOTABLE
- Cowles is 0-0-2 at home and 1-1-0 on the road this season.
- Rafaniello led all players with four shots and put three on goal.
- NJIT outshot UMBC, 19-14.
- UMBC is 0-0-3 in overtime this season.
