BALTIMORE – UMBC junior back Julian Conze (Telgte, Germany) scored a goal and added an assist and senior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) marked his return to the lineup by posting a shutout as the Retrievers blanked Binghamton, 2-0, in a crucial America East contest played at Retriever Soccer Park.
UMBC earned its first league win since the opener on September 18 and improved to 7-6-1 overall and 2-3-0 in conference play. Binghamton slipped to 7-4-1, 2-2-0).
"We played a 90-minute game against a well-coached team and a team that's been on a roll," said head coach Pete Caringi, Jr. "I'm so proud of the group."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the fifth time this fall, UMBC took a lead in the first eight minutes of the game. Conze took a corner and sophomore midfielder William Forby (Vegle, Denmark) made a near post run and headed it past Binghamton goalkeeper P.J. Parker just three minutes into the contest.
- Jones contributed the second goal, blasting a ball down the left side of the field and all the way into the box. Sophomore forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep) ran it down and was pushed from behind, setting up a penalty kick. Conze converted his second PK and fourth goal overall of the season, blasting a shot past Parker's left side.
- Trailing 2-0, Binghamton pressed but only tested Jones once with a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.
- Parker got a measure of revenge in the 59' of the second half. After UMBC freshman midfielder Hayden Lim's (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) shot toward goal was knocked away by a Binghamton handball, the Binghamton goalkeeper got a left hand on Conze's second PK opportunity of the game.
- But UMBC only permitted one Bearcat shot in the final 45 minutes and recorded their third shutout of the year.
NOTABLE
- Conze posted his eighth assist, the most by a Retriever since Gaeton Caltabiano recorded eight in 2013.
- In his fifth game this season, Jones recorded his first shutout and the 11th of his career. It was Jones' second shutout versus Binghamton – the other occurred in 2018.
UMBC heads to New York to face UAlbany on Sunday, Oct. 17 at noon.
