ALBANY – UMBC men's soccer earned a critical road point as the Retrievers and UAlbany Great Danes played to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Sunday afternoon at Tom and Mary Casey Stadium.

With two games remaining in the regular season, the Retrievers are now 7-6-2 overall and 2-3-1 in America East competition, while UAlbany Great Danes moves to 8-4-1, 3-1-1.

For the second consecutive game, sophomore midfielder William Forby (Denmark) put UMBC on the board first, netting his third goal of the season in the 31'. But the Great Danes tied the score less than four minutes later and the two teams went scoreless for the final 75 minutes.

"It was a great effort on the road against a well-coached UAlbany team," said head coach Pete Caringi, Jr.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UMBC senior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) made three saves in the first 20 minutes and the Retrievers searched for offense.
  • But the Retrievers struck on a nice build up as five touches ended up in the net. Junior forward Justin John-Langba () pass from right to left found sophomore forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep). Calheria's effort struck the left post and bounded to the waiting Forby, who deposited the rebound.
  • But the Danes countered as Giuliano Lucca netted a goal with Jones several yards off his line.
  • The UMBC defense held UAlbany to no shots in goal in the second half.
  • The Danes registered the first three shots of overtime, but Calheira had the final two, missing the net in the 105' and 106'.

NOTABLE

  • Jones made six saves in the contest and is now 3-1-2 on the season.

UMBC will play its final regular season home match on Saturday, Oct. 23 when the nationally-ranked New Hampshire Wildcats visit Retriever Soccer Park. The men's soccer program will honor Jackson Becher, in a pre-game Senior Night ceremony. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
