Women's Basketball Battles, Falls in #AEPlayoffs Quarterfinals to UMass Lowell, 66-58

LOWELL, Mass. - The UMBC women's basketball used a third and fourth quarter battle to claw back but ultimately fell to the UMass Lowell River Hawks, 66-58, on Wednesday evening.

 

The River Hawks move to 16-14 on the season and will face the Maine Black Bears in the semifinals. The Retrievers finished the season at 10-18.

 

Senior Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./RIverdale Baptist) finished the night with 23 points (9-25, 2-11 3FG), while junior Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) chipped in another 15 points (6-11, 33 FG). 

 

Trailing 31-18 at the half, the Retrievers began to gain momentum in the third quarter as they clawed back to trail by just three, 42-39, heading into the fourth quarter. After UMass Lowell scored the opening basket of the third, UMBC went on a 12-2 run to cut the lead down to five, 35-30, with 5:24 to play. The teams went back and forth before Oliver hit a three-point basket to cut the lead to three, 40-37, with 1:35 to play. The River Hawks hit two free throws to go extend the lead back to five, 42-37, before freshman Lyric Swann (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) made a jumper shot with 23 seconds left in the quarter to send the game into the final period with UMass Lowell leading, 42-39.

 

In the third quarter, the Retrievers shot a game-best 60 percent from the floor (9-15).

 

Out of the gates in the fourth quarter, sophomore Eryn Fisher (Perth, Australia) cut the lead to just one, 42-41, before the River Hawks quickly extended it back to six with eight minutes to go. Senior Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) scored the next four points for UMBC to help bring the lead back to two, 47-45, with 5:58 on the clock. The River Hawks once again took a six-point lead but baskets by redshirt-sophomore O'leshya Braxton (Paterson, N.J.) and Oliver helped to cut it down to 51-50 with 2:56 remaining. A huge steal from Oliver led to a fast break layup to give the Retrievers the lead for the first time since the beginning of the game, 52-51, before the River Hawks went on an 11-0 run to retake the lead for good, 62-52, at the 44 second mark. Down the stretch, UMass Lowell was able to hit their free throws to seal the 66-58 victory.

 

Costa scored the first basket of the game before the River Hawks opened up a 6-2 lead. After Oliver made is 6-4 with 6:36 to play, UMass Lowell would go on a 6-2 run to take a 15-6 lead. Oliver and sophomore Paula Rubio (Madrid, Spain) would close out the quarter for UMBC but the Retrievers trailed, 18-9, after the first ten minutes.

 

The River Hawks continued their offensive beat, scoring the first seven points of the second quarter to take a 25-9 lead before Summers scored four-straight to cut the lead to 12, 25-13. The Retrievers ended the second quarter on a 5-2 run, but the River Hawks would take a 31-18 advantage into halftime. 

 

Through the first two quarters, the Retrievers shot just 26.9 percent from the field and were held without a three-point basket. Overall for the game, UMBC shot 37.1 percent (23-62) from the floor and made only two three-pointers, both coming from Oliver.

 

In addition to her 23 points, Oliver added four steals and two assists to her stat line. Summers had nine rebounds, tied with classmate Jen Gast (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville).
