Box Score WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - For the first time since the 2011 season, the UMBC women's basketball team earned a season-sweep of the Hartford Hawks with a 56-47 victory on Wednesday night.
UMBC moves to 7-14 on the year and 3-7 in America East play, while Hartford falls to 0-23 on the season and 0-10 in conference contests.
Junior Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) led the Retrievers off the bench with 19 points, shooting 6-12 from the field and 7-8 from the free throw line. Freshman Lyric Swann (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) chipped in 16 points, going 7-12 from the floor and 2-3 from three-point range.
The Retrievers offensively took control in the first quarter, with Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) scoring the first basket of the game. The teams went back-and-forth through the opening 10 minutes, with the lead never extending past two for UMBC. Swann scored the final basket of the first quarter to help give the Retrievers a 14-10 lead.
Oliver extended the lead to six, 16-10, early in the second quarter with a pair of free throws before Hartford cut it back down to four. Swann hit a three to put the Retrievers up 19-12 to force a Hawks timeout. After Hartford cut the lead down to five, Paula Rubio (Madrid, Spain) converted a three-point play and Oliver hit a layup to extend the lead to 10, 24-14, with 6:07 to play. Hartford hit a pair of free throws at the end of the period but UMBC took a 27-21 lead into halftime.
The Retrievers shot 33.3 percent (10-33) from the field during the first half while the Hawks shot 31.3 percent (10-32).
The third quarter was slow for both teams as Eryn Fisher (Perth, Australia) scored a basket at the 8:34 mark to give UMBC a 29-21 lead; no one would score again until the 4:58 mark when Hartford scored a layup. The Hawks cut the Retrievers lead down to five before UMBC went on an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 13, 37-24, with 1:21 to play. The teams exchanged baskets at the end of the quarter with the Retrievers taking a 39-28 lead into the final quarter.
UMBC was up 45-36 before Hartford used a mini 5-0 run to cut the lead down to six, 46-40, with 5:52 on the clock. Summers extended the lead back to eight, but Hartford responded with a three-pointer to cut it back down to five, 48-43, at the 3:45 mark. Summers scored six of UMBC's seven points to push the lead back to 10, 55-45, and Rubio put up a free throw to seal the 57-46 win.
On the day, the Retrievers shot 41.2 percent from the floor (21-51) and 57.1 percent from the free throw line (12-21). Hartford held a one rebound advantage over UMBC, 39-38, and scored 14 points off UMBC turnovers.
In addition to her 16 points, Swann added six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Rubio had four assists and four rebounds. Jen Gast (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) led the team with eight rebounds.
The Retrievers return home on Saturday, February 8 as they face the UMass Lowell River Hawks at 12 p.m.
