Retrievers Fall, 74-48 to Maine on Saturday Afternoon

Bangor, Maine-- UMBC men's basketball fell at Maine, 74-48 on Saturday afternoon. The Retrievers were led by Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) with 14 points as UMBC shot just 38 percent from the floor in the loss. 

UMBC falls to 14-16, 7-8 AE on the year while Maine improves to 8-21, 4-11 AE. 

Kennedy led the Retrievers with 14 points on 6-8 shooting, just one point off his career-high. K.J. Jackson (Missouri City, Texas) was the only other Retriever in double figures at 13 points. 

Andrew Fleming led four Black Bears in double figures with 21 points. 

The Retrievers found themselves trailing 6-2 early before ripping off a 7-0 run to give them a 9-6 lead at the under 16 timeout. Brandon Horvath led the run with four points and K.J. Jackson drilling a corner three forced a Maine timeout.

However, the Black Bears would take a five-point lead just minutes later, before Keondre Kennedy went on a 5-0 run of his own to tie it back up. Maine would punch last in the half, using an 11-0 run over five minutes to gain some separation. The drought would end with a Daniel Akin (London, England) layup as UMBC trailed 35-24 at the break. 

Jackson led the Retrievers in the first half with seven points and Kennedy chipping in five. UMBC shot just 36 percent from the floor with Maine shooting 53 percent and outrebounding the Retrievers 23-12. 

Maine came out in the second half and continued to hold the Retrievers. Kennedy scored the first points of the half for UMBC six minutes in. 

The Black Bears would use a 19-4 run over a 10-minute stretch to extend their lead to as many as 25, holding the Retrievers to just 38 percent shooting in a 74-48 win against UMBC on Saturday. 

UMBC will conclude the regular season at home on Tuesday, March 3, when the Retrievers host Stony Brook. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+. Tickets are available at TicketMaster.com.
