Box Score Albany, N.Y.-- UMBC men's basketball picked up their first road win against the Great Danes since 2009 in a 69-50 victory on Thursday. The Retrievers had four in double figures, led by a game-high 21 from K.J. Jackson (Missouri City, Texas). UMBC forced 18 turnovers in the win.
The Retrievers improve to 13-14, 6-6 AE to win their fourth straight while the Great Danes fall to 14-13, 7-5 AE.
Jackson led a quartet of Retrievers in double figures with 21 points. Jackson chipped in six assists and four steals. Brandon Horvath (West River, Md./Southern) and Dimitrije Spasojevic (Vrsac, Serbia) added 16 points with Horvath adding 14 rebounds. R.J. Eytle-Rock (London, England) chipped in 10 and a career-high 10 boards in the win.
Ahmad Clark led the Great Danes with 18 points and Antonio Rizzuto adding 11.
UMBC took control early in the first half racing out to a 7-0 lead in the first 7:14 to take an early lead. The Retrievers would then get six straight from Dimitrije Spasojevic to force a UAlbany timeout up 11-3, holding the Great Danes without a field goal for nearly ten minutes.
The Great Danes would respond, putting together an 8-0 spurt to cut the lead to single digits, but R.J. Eytle-Rock would drill a three from the wing to end the run. That ignited a late run with K.J. Jackson scoring the last four to give the Retrievers a 35-22 lead at the half.
Spasojevic led the way with 10 points in the first half. Jackson, Eytle-Rock, and Horvath each had eight with Horvath chipping in eight rebounds. The Retrievers shot 47 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three. UMBC held UAlbany to just 27 percent from the floor forcing 11 turnovers.
UMBC continued where they left off in the first half, pushing their lead up to 20 early in the half. UAlbany would not quit, cutting the deficit down to as little as 12 midway through the half, but timely buckets kept the lead in double figures.
L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School/William & Mary) salted the game away with a corner three late to give UMBC their fourth straight win, 69-50 on Thursday.
The Retrievers shot 46 percent from the floor, scoring 46 points in the paint. UMBC held the Great Danes to just 31 percent from the field and just 18 percent from three.
The Retrievers will now head to Vermont for a Saturday night clash with the Catamounts on ESPN+. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
