Desperate UMBC Rally Falls Short, Retrievers Fall, 1-0, to Bonnies

Box Score

BALTIMORE – For the fourth consecutive game, UMBC conceded the match's first goal and, despite ten second half shots, could not get on the board and fell, 1-0, to visiting St. Bonaventure.

The Retrievers fall to 1-3-0, while the Bonnies get their first win of the season against two losses.

With a pair of shutout victories Navy (4-0) captured the UMBC-Navy Classic. Navy defeated St. Bonaventure, 1-0, and St. Peter's 2-0 in Annapolis on Friday and Sunday.

UMBC senior left back Jon Bell (Silver Spring, Md./Richard Montgomery) and freshman back Orlygur Omarsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The visitors scored in the 11th minute and led for the final 79. The Bonnies were awarded a free kick just outside the box and UMBC sophomore goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) saved, but could not control Shea Currey's hard drive. Francesco Caorsi beat the Retriever defense to the rebound and knocked in the loose ball.

UMBC freshman forward Dadi Ingason (Hafnarfjodur, Iceland) had a pair of outstanding chances in a four-minute span midway through the second half. In the 63rd minute, his drive from just outside the box whizzed by the near right post. Then, he headed a deep cross off the underside of the crossbar, but Bonnie goalkeeper Justyn Sandhu pounced on the loose ball just outside the goal line.

UMBC outshot SBU, 14-8, but only put 3 of 14 shots on net. Both Sandhu and Jones were credited with three saves apiece in the game.

Ingason led all players with five shots.

The Retrievers complete the five-game homestand by welcoming 2018 NEC champion Long Island University to Retriever Soccer Park on Saturday, Sept. 14.
