Women's Soccer Falls, 2-0, to Lehigh on Friday Night

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The UMBC women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 contest to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Friday, Sept. 13 at Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem, Pa. 

 

STRAIGHT FACTS

Juliana Rafaniello (Old Bridge, N.J.) sent the first shot of the game for the Retrievers high over the net.

 

Lehigh scored first in the 16th minute off a rebound into the right side of the goal.

 

Christina Corbi (Medford, N.J.) had a shot blocked in the 22nd minute before Nikki Saad (Hummelstown, Pa.) sent one into the hands of the Lehigh keeper in the 24th minute.

 

The UMBC backline kept Lehigh away from the net, blocking back-to-back shots in the 25th minute before Jade Wilkins (Stoney Beach, Md./The Catholic High School) made a save in the 27th minute.

 

Laura Ventura (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) sent the final shot of the first half wide of the net as Lehigh took a 1-0 lead into the break.

 

Elysia Paolillo (Holliston, Mass.) and Corbi each put a shot on goal in the early part of the second half, but Lehigh's keeper was able to save both shots.

 

In the 76th minute, Wilkins made another in the left corner of the post after Lehigh sent a header towards the left post.

 

The Mountain Hawks added a second goal in the 82nd minute after a free kick was sent into the box and knocked into the left corner of the net.

 

Wilkins made two more saves in the final ten minutes to keep the final at 2-0 in favor of the host Lehigh.

 

FOR THE RECORD

Lehigh picks up its first win of the season as they move to 1-2-4. UMBC falls to 1-3-2 on the year.

 

BY THE NUMBERS

13- For the first time this season, UMBC was outshot by an opponent as the Mountain Hawks edged the Retrievers, 13-10. Lehigh also held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal.


3 - Three Retrievers were able to play within 100 miles of their hometowns: Saad (Hummelstown, Pa.; 82.5 miles), Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.; 20.6 miles), and Webber (Yardley, Pa.; 42.8 miles); Stevenson led the team in shots with three.

 

MINDING THE NET

Miranda Royds picked up the win of the Mountain Hawks, making three saves in her fourth shutout of the season. Wilkins, in her first start since Temple, made a season-high six saves in goal.

 

ONTO THE NEXT ONE

The Retrievers wrap up a four-game road swing at Longwood on Sunday, Sept. 15 with a 3 p.m. contest.
