Coppersmith Tosses Second Consecutive No-Hitter; Winslow Drives in Three as Softball Stuns Top-Seeded UMass Lowell, 5-0, in America East Tournament

Box Score

West Hartford, Conn. -- For the second consecutive day, Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) threw a no-hitter as the fourth-seeded UMBC Softball stunned regular season champion and first-seeded UMass Lowell, 5-0, on Thursday morning in the second round of the America East Tournament.

UMBC (28-22, 7-11 AE) has now picked up two wins in the America East Tournament for the first time since 2007.

Coppersmith walked the first two UMass Lowell (27-19, 15-3 AE) batters of the game, and then cruised, retiring 17 in a row at one point, before an error put a runner on with two outs in the sixth. She struck out six and allowed only those three base runners.

Kaly Winslow (Leesburg, Va.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with two RBI of her own.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third when Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.), Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) and Coppersmith all walked to start the inning. Pierce then smacked a single to left to score two and advanced to second on the throw home. After a pop out, Winslow singled to right to drive in Coppersmith and Pierce to make it 4-0.

The score remained 4-0 until the top of the fourth when Pierce hit a leadoff single, then moved to second on a dropped third strike that put her in scoring position with two outs. Winslow then blooped a single over the outstretched glove of the short stop in shallow left to score Pierce and make it 5-0.

Coppersmith improved to 19-12 on the season, to set the record for most wins in a season by a freshman pitcher, and second-most all-time.

Keffler went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the second day in a row, while Daigneau and All-Rookie team honoree Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) each had a single.

The no-hitter was Coppersmith's fifth of the season (one perfect game and four no-hitters), and the team's sixth of the year as Gillian McCarthy (Northfield, N.J.) threw one at Maryland Eastern Shore last month. All-Rookie team catcher Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) has caught all six no-hitters this season.

UMBC will face No.3 Stony Brook tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the winner advancing to the championship, and the loser going to the losers' bracket final.
