Beeman Powers UMBC to Season Finale Split with Fairfield on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Baltimore, Md.-- The Retrievers closed out the 2019 season with a win after dropping the first game of the double header on Saturday to the Stags. Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) provided the heroics in game two with the go-ahead solo home run in the seventh that lifted UMBC to a 5-4 win after falling in game one 10-4.

UMBC ends the year at 22-31 while the Stags move to 31-23.

Game One:

Fairfield came out with three runs in the first two innings, as UMBC went hitless for the first two innings. UMBC finally broke through in the fourth trailing 4-0. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led off the inning with a double. After advancing on a balk, Raven Beeman drove in Wright on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 after four.

Trailing 6-0 in the eighth, UMBC struck again, this time Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) with a sacrifice fly that scored Reese Varley (Haymarket, Va.) to cut the deficit to 6-2. However, the Stags would put up four in the ninth to take a 10-2 lead. The Retrievers would add a pair in the ninth with a big two-run home run from Beeman to make it 10-4, but the Stags held on for a win by that score.

Beeman had the big day driving in three runs to lead the Retrievers.

Game Two:

Fairfield continued where they left off in the first game, putting up a pair of runs in the first two innings to take an early 4-0 lead. However, the Retrievers never wavered, scoring the last five runs of the game en route to the win.

Beeman led off the second with a single and would score on a Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) two-run blast to cut the deficit to 4-2. Varley would make it a one-run game with an RBI single that scored Joe Milkowski (Lackawanna, N.Y.). Pinkston would tie it after drawing a bases loaded walk that plated Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) to make it 4-4.

However, it was Beeman who provided the fireworks, smashing a solo shot to center to put UMBC in front. That would be all they needed, as Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Good Counsel/Appalachian State) shut down the Stags to end the season with a 5-4 win.

Beeman, Wright, and Pinkston each had a pair of hits. Schoch earned his sixth win of the year, striking out two.
