Men's Lacrosse Rally Falls Just Short, Retrievers Fall at UAlbany, 9-7

Box Score

Albany, N.Y. – Visiting UMBC could not recover from a five-goal first quarter deficit and fell, 9-7, at defending America East champion UAlbany before 2,180 fans at Casey Stadium.

The Retrievers cut an 8-3 late third quarter deficit to 8-7 with 4:42 to play in the fourth quarter. UMBC won the ensuing draw, but could not get a shot off and the Danes scored a man-up insurance goal with 68 seconds remaining for the final margin of victory.

UMBC held UAlbany scoreless for over 27 minutes in the second half.

The Retrievers fell to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in America East play, while the Great Danes improved to 5-4, 4-1.

Freshman midfielder Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) was UMBC's lone multiple-point producer, recording his first career two-goal game. Sophomore netminder Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made 12 saves, including eight stops with just three goals allowed in the final 45 minutes.

UAlbany led, 7-3, at the half, and extended the margin to 8-3 early in the third quarter. But UMBC picked up momentum after killing off a 6-on-4 man-down situation. Bohanan scored on a nice dodge to trim the deficit to 8-4 with 4:01 to play in the third quarter.

Junior attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored his team-leading 26th goal of the campaign right at the end of the shot clock to bring UMBC to within 8-5 just 1:27 into the fourth.

Freshman Jack Thomas (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) scored his first career goal and sliced the deficit to 8-6 with a nice face-dodge and outside blast with 9:14 remaining in the period.

After a Lingner save on one end, Bohanan netted his second of the game to bring UMBC to within 8-7 with 4:42 left in regulation.

UMBC won the ensuing draw, but did not get a shot off, setting up the hosts' final sequence and insurance marker.

Sophomore defender Corey Gaines (Edgewater, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and junior linemate Colin Kasner (Crofton, Md./DeMatha) led the defensive effort, combining for five caused turnovers and seven ground balls.

UMBC got on the board first, as sophomore attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) came from behind the goal and netted his 15 th goal of the season at the 2:21 mark of the first quarter.

But the Great Danes took a 2-1 lead by the midpoint of the quarter and then won the final five draws of the period. They added four additional first quarter scores and led, 6-1, after 15 minutes.

The Retriever defense would settle in during the second quarter and the visitors would close to within 6-3 on goals by junior attackman Brett McIntyre (Calgary, Alberta) and sophomore linemate Steven Zichelli (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park). Zichelli's goal came with just 1:24 to play in the half, but the Danes won the ensuing draw, and netted their first goal of the quarter with just 1.5 seconds remaining on the clock.

UMBC returns home on Saturday, April 20, when they host UMass Lowell. The opening face-off is set for noon, but the Retrievers will honor ten seniors in pre-game ceremonies, so fans are encouraged to be in their seats at 11:45 a.m.
