Washington, D.C. -- Gillian McCarthy (Northfield, N.J.) and Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) each pitched complete-game shutouts as the UMBC Softball team closed play at the Colonial Classic with a pair of wins on Saturday. The Retrievers defeated Cornell, 10-0, in five innings and followed that with a 4-0 victory over Canisius.

Game 1

UMBC (6-6) started quickly against Cornell (0-6), exploding for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) reached on an error to start the inning and moved to second on a Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) bunt single. Freshman Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) singled home Keffler and Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) followed with an RBI single of her own. Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) then walked before Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md.) and Kaly Winslow (Leesburg, Va.) each followed with RBI singles to make it 4-0. After an error made it 5-0, Keffler came back up for a second time in the inning and drove in Winslow and Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md.) with a single down the right field line to make it 7-0.

Lonchar and Pierce hit back-to-back doubles to start the bottom of the second to make it 8-0, and then Winslow added another RBI single to make it 9-0. After a Dawson single put runners at the corner, the Retrievers executed a perfect double steal, with Winslow taking home to make it 10-0. Neither team would score the rest of the way as the game ended after the top of the fifth due to run rule.

McCarthy (2-2) worked all five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out two. Eight Retrievers collected hits in the game, with seven different players collecting at least one RBI. Hawker, Lonchar, Hammett and Winslow all collected two hits, while Keffler and Winslow drove in two runs each.

Game 2

For the second straight game, UMBC scored in the first inning. Keffler hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a Daigneau groundout and scored on a throwing error. The Retrievers doubled their lead in the second, when Dawson reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a Keffler single to second. The final scoring of the game came in the third inning, when Coppersmith worked a two out walk and Winslow followed with a two-run homer, her second in as many days.

Canisius (0-9) got a leadoff double in the bottom of the fifth, but Coppersmith (4-3) escaped and cruised the rest of the way. The freshman lefty allowed just two hits in seven innings, while striking out seven and walking one.

The UMBC Softball team returns to campus to host Towson for a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m.
