PERFECTION: Coppersmith Throws Perfect Game and Goes 3-for-3 at the Plate as Softball Takes Series From Binghamton For First Time Since 2009

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.-- Freshman pitcher Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa) struck out seven and retired all 18 batters she faced in the circle, while also going 3-for-3 with three RBI at the plate to lead the UMBC Softball team to an 8-0 (6) victory over visiting Binghamton on Sunday afternoon.

It was the second perfect game in program history, but first one of longer than five innings. Kelly Lane threw a perfect game in a 13-0 five inning win at Maryland Eastern Shore on March 8, 2014.

The win clinched the Retrievers first series victory over Binghamton since 2009.

Coppersmith drew a one out walk in the first, but was stranded. UMBC (15-12, 2-1 AE), however, would come alive offensively after that. After recording just two hits in five innings against Bearcat starter Rozlyn Price in yesterday's setback, the Retrievers jumped all over her in the second inning.

Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) started the inning with a single up the middle, she then moved to third when Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) put down a beautiful sacrifice bunt and the throw to first hit Lonchar in the back and went into right field. Kaly Winslow (Leesburg, Va.) then walked to load the bases, and Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md.) ripped a single down the line in right to score Hawker and put UMBC up 1-0. After a pop up and a fielder's choice got Lonchar at the plate, Coppersmith smacked a two out single to the gap in right center to score Dawson and Winslow to make it 3-0.

Neither team would put anyone on base again until Coppersmith hit a one out, opposite field double to left center in the fifth. Binghamton (11-14, 1-2 AE) attempted to pick her off second with two outs, but the throw sailed into the outfield and then got by the center fielder to allow Coppersmith to score and make it 4-0.

The Retrievers then scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game via run rule. After two groundouts to start the inning, Winslow worked a walk and Dawson followed with an infield single that was thrown away, allowing Winslow to move to third. Chloe Obispo (Virginia Beach, Va.) then worked a full count walk to load the bases, and Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) beat out an infield single to third to Winslow and push the lead to 5-0.

Coppersmith then singled to left to score Dawson and make it 6-0, followed by Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) singling off the pitchers glove to make it 7-0. The game ended when a 2-2 pitch got by the catcher and bounced to the backstop allowing Daigneau to score from third and end the game.

Mallory Pollack (Ivyland, Pa.) played left and was in the flex position and saved the perfect game when she made a great catch on a sinking liner in the top of the fifth.

UMBC continues its season-long 15 game homestand when it welcomes Norfolk State to The Diamond for a doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
