Softball Off To Best Start Since 2015 After Saturday Split

| Box Score 2

Baltimore, Md.-- Freshman pitcher Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) tossed her second straight complete game shutout as the UMBC Softball team beat Robert Morris, 1-0, to get off to its best start since 2015. The Retrievers then dropped an 11-3 (6) decision to defending America East champion UAlbany in a non-conference matchup later in the day.

With the victory over RMU (5-19), UMBC moved over .500 for the first time since April 25, 2015. It was the sixth complete game shutout of the season for Coppersmith (8-6) as she completed a 3-0 week in which she struck out 30 and allowed just two runs in 21 innings.

In the morning, the Retrievers were once again the designated road team against the Colonials. The only run of the game came in the top of the sixth when Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) smashed a two out double to left that scored Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio.) from first. Coppersmith went the distance, striking out five, walking three and allowing four hits. Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Pierce and Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md.) also had hits.

In the afternoon matchup, UAlbany (9-8) went up 2-0 on UMBC (11-11) in the second inning thanks to a home run. An error allowed another run to score in the third to make it 3-0, but Kaly Winslow (Leesburg, Va.) hit a three run homer in the bottom of the third to tie the game. The Great Danes would then respond with four runs in each of the next two innings to take the game. Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.), Anna lonchar (Bristow, Va.) and Kennedy Lamb (Mexico, N.Y.) all singled, while Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md.) had a double.

The Retrievers host in-state rival Maryland Eastern Shore for a doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 1 p.m.
