Coppersmith Fans School Record 17 in Complete Game One-Hitter; Daigneau Drives in Four as Softball Sweeps on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Wilmington, N.C. -- Freshman Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) dazzled as she struck out a school record 17 batters and scored the only run as the UMBC Softball team defeated host UNC Wilmington 1-0 on Saturday morning. The Retrievers then came alive at the plate in a 9-1, five inning, romp over North Carolina A&T later in the afternoon.

Against UNCW (7-9), Coppersmith, who broke her own school record set just last Sunday with a 14 strikeout performance at NC State, allowed just one hit and walked none. She also scored the only run of the game on a Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) bunt single in the third inning. Daigneau then paced the UMBC (3-3) offense in the second game, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Sophomore outfielder Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) went 5-for-6 on the day, including 3-for-3 with three runs scored in the second game. In the opener, UMBC managed five hits, with  Keffler and Daigneau having two hits each, and Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md.) with the other. Keffler also added a walk in the game.

In game two, sophomore outfielder Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored, while Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) added an RBI single. Kennedy Lamb (Mexico, N.Y.) had two hits of her own, with both coming in a five-run second inning. Lamb and Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) also scored a run.

Gillian McCarthy started and allowed just one run in 3.2 innings, while striking out four and walking one in her first career win. Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md.) entered to pitch in relief in the fourth inning, went 1.1 innings and retired all four NC A&T (0-8) batters she faced.

UMBC wraps-up play in the Courtyard by Marriott Seahawk Softball Classic with two games on Sunday. An 8:30 a.m. game against Lehigh and then a 1:30 p.m. contest against NC A&T.
