Women's Lacrosse Holds Off VCU, 11-8

RICHMOND, Va. - An hour and a half weather delay didn't hinder the UMBC women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the VCU Rams, 11-8.

STRAIGHT FACTS

-The Retrievers took an early 5-0 lead with 12:41 remaining in the first half, as Lauren McDonald scored twice, once off an assist from Lily Kennedy, along with Grayson Corbett, Zoë Pekins, and Payton Van Kirk.

-The Rams stopped the run at the 11:46 mark, bringing the score to 5-1 before Catherine Sims added another tally off a feed from Kennedy. VCU added another two before halftime to cut the deficit to 6-3.

-Out of the break, the Rams scored just 17 seconds into the period to close the Retrievers' lead to 6-4. VCU would add a second goal ten minutes later to cut the lead down to 6-5.

-Kennedy gave UMBC a little breathing room as she found the net at the 16:47 mark before VCU added another goal to close the gap back down to 7-6.

-McDonald and Van Kirk each scored again, thanks to assists from freshman Rachel Ridgley, before Pekins added one more to extend UMBC's lead to 10-6 with 8:34 remaining to play.

-VCU ended UMBC's scoring run with 6:35 on the clock. Sims would score her second of the game with 1:46 left to play to give the Retrievers the 11-7 lead before the Rams scored with just three seconds remaining.

UMBC moves to 2-0 on the season while VCU falls to 1-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

11 - Carly Tolino followed up her 17-save performance on Wednesday with 11 stops in net for the Retrievers to move to 2-0 on the season; UMBC was a perfect 11-11 on clears in the first half of the game.

4 - Cassie Evans led the team with four ground balls on the day; McDonald controlled four of the team's nine draws.

3 - McDonald and Kennedy led the team with three points.

2 - Van Kirk and Jenna Baverman each caused two turnovers for UMBC.

1.5 - The teams faced an hour and a half weather delay due to inclement weather in Richmond.

UMBC will open the 2019 home season at UMBC Stadium on Wednesday, Feb. 20 as they welcome Mount St. Mary's at 5 p.m.
