Women's Basketball Falls to Syracuse, 82-48, to Close Out Six-Game Road Swing

Box Score

The UMBC women's basketball teams six-game road swing came to an end on Sunday afternoon, with the Retrievers falling to the Syracuse Orange, 82-48, at the Carrier Dome. The Orange move to 5-4 on the year while the Retrievers fall to 2-7.

UMBC opened the game with a 6-5 lead thanks in part to baskets from Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) and Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) before Syracuse went on a 9-0 run to take a 14-6 lead with a little over three and a half minutes left in the first quarter. Oliver hit a three to cut the deficit to 14-9 before the Orange converted a three-point play. The Retrievers ended the quarter on a 6-0 run, capped by free throws from Summers and Jen Gast (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) to cut Syracuse's lead to 17-15 heading into the second quarter.

The teams traded buckets through the opening minutes of the second quarter, which included Oliver hitting two three-point baskets to close the Orange's lead to 27-25. However, Syracuse used an 11-2 run at the end of the quarter, capped only by a basket from Eryn Fisher (Perth, Australia) to take a 38-27 advantage into halftime.

The Orange opened up the third quarter just as they left the second, with an 11-2 run with UMBC's only basket coming from Summers off an assist from Sariah Penese (Wellington, New Zealand) to take an early 49-29 lead. Lyric Swann (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) broke the scoring drought for UMBC before Syracuse scored another six points to take a 55-31 lead halfway through the period. Oliver converted a pair of free throws before Swann hit a three to cut into the lead, 55-36; but, the Orange ended the period on a 9-3 run to head into the final quarter with a 64-39 lead.

Syracuse went on a 15-0 run to start the fourth quarter and took a 79-39 lead before Summers converted two pairs of free throws. Swann and O'lesheya Braxton (Paterson, N.J.) would score the only other points for the Retrievers as the Orange went on to win, 82-48.

Oliver and Summers each led with 15 points and four rebounds, while Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) led the Retrievers with a team-high five rebounds. For the Orange, Digna Strautmane led with 17 points.

UMBC will return home for the first time in a month on Sunday, December 15 as they host the Morgan State Lady Bears at 11 a.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's team; the men will face Coppin State at 1:30 p.m.
