Four Retrievers Score in Double Digits; Women's Basketball Earns 92-50 Opening Day Win

BALTIMORE - The Johnetta Hayes era began on a high note as the UMBC women's basketball team posted a 92-50 victory over the Gettysburg Bullets on Tuesday, November 5 at the UMBC Event Center. Four players notched double digits on the stat sheets, led by senior Te'yJah Oliver with 22 points (9-15 FG, 4-5 3FG). 

 

UMBC moves to 1-0 on the year. Gettysburg remains 0-0, as the game with the Retrievers was an exhibition for them.

 

The Retrievers took a 24-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, led by Oliver with seven points. Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) opened the game with a layup before the Bullets tied the game up. The Retrievers then rattled off eight straight points, capped by two free throws from Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) for a 10-4 lead at the 6:45 mark. The Bullets closed the gap to 15-6 at the media timeout, but the Retrievers held them to just five points in the remainder of the quarter to take a 24-11 lead at the end of one.

 

In the second quarter, UMBC held Gettysburg to just 3-16 (18.8%) from the floor and outrebounded the Bullets, 19-9, as they took a 50-22 lead at halftime. Oliver scored the first five points of the quarter, making a layup and putting up her second three-pointer of the game at the 9:06 mark. No team scored again until Gettysburg made a layup with 6:25 to go in the quarter, cutting the score to 29-13. After the media timeout, UMBC closed out the quarter with a 13-0 run, 12 of which came from Oliver, Jen Gast (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville), and Paula Rubio (Madrid, Spain).

 

The Retrievers found their stride after halftime as they held the Bullets to just 14 points a quarter of the next ten minutes. Freshman Lyric Swann (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) led the Retrievers with eight points in the third quarter, going 3-4 from the first, including a three-pointer at the 7:41 mark to give UMBC a 59-26 lead. The quarter ended on a 14-4 run, including two baskets from Eryn Fisher (Kingsley, Australia) to give the Retrievers a 75-36 lead heading into the final quarter.

 

The final 10 minutes saw both teams play evenly match, as UMBC outscored Gettysburg, 17-14. The Retrievers shot 6-10 from the field and the Bullets shot 50 percent (6-12). Sophomore Silvia Ferreiros (Lugo, Spain) scored five points off the bench for the Retrievers, going 2-2 from the charity stripe and hitting a three. 

 

As a team, the Retrievers shot 57.4 percent from the field (35-61) and 50 percent (6-12) from beyond the arc. 50 of UMBC's 92 points were scored in the paint. The team forced 19 Gettysburg turnovers, scoring 24 points off those possessions; the team also recorded 15 steals.

 

Oliver finished the day with 22 points, four assists, and four steals. Gast posted a double-double with career-highs of 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Rubio chipped in 10 points to go along with a career-high eight assists. Swann, in her UMBC debut, put up 12 points and three steals.

 

The Retrievers will return home to the Event Center on Saturday, November 9 when they host Howard. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game is set for an ESPN3 broadcast with Raven Harris and Troy Green on the call and Pandora Wilson on the sideline.
