Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The UMBC women's basketball team dropped its third road contest in a row as they fell to the William & Mary Tribe, 76-48, at Kaplan Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Retrievers opened the game with a 5-0 lead, thanks to a three from Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) and a layup from Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.). After the Tribe scored their first basket, Lyric Swann (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) extended the lead before William & Mary tied the game up at 7-all with less than five minutes to go. The teams traded basket to make the score, 11-11, before the Tribe pulled ahead 17-13. Oliver converted two free throws and O'leyshea Braxton (Paterson, N.J.) hit a jumper to tie the game up at 17-all, but the Tribe finished the game on a 4-1 run to end the first quarter with a score of 22-18.
The Retrievers shot just 21.4 percent from the floor in the second quarter, adding only seven points to the board. The Tribe opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run, taking a 30-18 lead before Oliver hit a layup to cut the Retriever scoring drought. Oliver and Swann scored three of UMBC's next points to cut William and Mary's lead to 32-23 before the Tribe made another two baskets. Paulo Rubio (Madrid, Spain) scored the only other basket for the Retrievers at the 32 second mark before the Tribe hit a three-pointer as the final seconds ticked off to take a 39-25 lead into halftime.
Out of the break, Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) scored the first basket to cut the lead down to 39-27, but William & Mary put up six straight points to extend its lead by 18. After Rubio and Dominika Skrocka (Moscow, Russia) made the score 50-31, the Tribe took its largest lead of the game so far at 24, before Oliver scored five-straight points. William & Mary closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 60-36 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Retrievers scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, eight of which came from Oliver and Summers who went 2-2 from the free throw line. But, the Tribe hit 50 percent of their shots in the fourth, include two threes, to post the 76-48 final.
The Retrievers shot 36.5 percent overall for the game and hit only two threes, both coming from Oliver. The guard finished the day with 17 points off 5-12 shooting and 5-5 from the free throw line. Summers finished with nine points and seven rebounds, followed by Rubio with eight points.
UMBC will take the week off before traveling to Annapolis to participate in the Navy Classic, where they'll face La Salle on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 1 p.m.
