STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The UMBC women's basketball team fell on the road for the first time this season to the Wagner Seahawks, 67-60, on Saturday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.

Both teams are now 2-2 on the season.

The opening quarters started on a 5-0 run for the Seahawks before Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) and Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) combined to put up seven points to give the Retrievers a 7-5 lead before the media timeout. After Wagner tied the game up, UMBC put up another six-straight point to take a 13-7 lead before the Seahawks cut the lead down to one. UMBC ended the quarter by ending its lead back to four, 18-14.

Oliver started the second quarter with a three to put the Retrievers up, 20-14, but the Seahawks hit a jumper and three-pointer to close the gap back to just one. After extending the lead to three after two free throws from Oliver, Wagner tied the game up at 22-all before O'leysha Braxton (Paterson, N.J.) broke the tie with a layup. The Seahawks took a seven-point lead, which Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) broke at the 3:11 mark with a jumper to cut the lead to 31-26. Oliver converted a three and Summers, off a steal, put back a layup to put the Retrievers within in, 31-30, before Oliver gave them the lead off a jumper in the paint. After Wagner hit a three to take back the lead, 34-31, Braxton tied the game back up; the Seahawks would convert a pair of free throws to go up, 36-34, and Oliver would hit the final basket to send both teams into halftime with a 36-36 score.

The third quarter saw two ties in the opening three minutes before Wagner jumped out to a 46-40 lead almost halfway through the period. Costa and Eryn Fisher (Perth, Australia) each hit a jumper to cut the lead down to 46-44 before Fisher converted a pair of free throws to tie the game up again. After Fisher made another layup to give the Retrievers a 48-46 lead, Oliver closed out the third quarter with six points to cap a 14-0 run for UMBC, giving them a 54-56 lead going into the final quarter.

Lyric Swann (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) counteracted an opening Wagner three-pointer with a jump shot to keep UMBC's lead at seven, 56-49. However, Wagner used an 18-1 run to take a 67-57 lead; as time expired in the game, Oliver hit a three-point bucket for the final 67-60 score.

Overall, the Retrievers shot 44 percent (22-50) and 75 percent (12-16) from the charity stripe. They caused 21 turnovers, scoring 24 points off those miscues.
