Middles Pace Offense as Volleyball Falls at Stony Brook

Stony Brook, N.Y. -- UMBC's trio of middles combined for over 60% of the offense, but the UMBC Volleyball team fell in three sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-23) at two-time defending conference champion Stony Brook (7-12, 2-2 AE) on Sunday afternoon. 

Senior Franchesca Reed (Aurora, Colo.) and freshman middle blockers Niki Khoshatefeh (Temecula, Calif.) and Emily Ferketic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) combined for 26 of UMBC's (3-14, 0-4 AE) 43 kills on the day. Reed finished with a team-best 11 kills on .375 hitting to go with three blocks, Khoshatefeh had nine kills on .389 hitting and four blocks, while Ferketic added six kills on .353 hitting with no errors and a block. 

Junior outside hitter Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn.) had nine kills and sophomore outside hitter Paige Krenik (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) had eight kills of her own. Senior libero Brooke Hayden (Mt.Airy, Md.) had a match-high 18 digs, freshman setter Riley Putnicki (Monument, Colo.) added 37 assists, three digs and three blocks. 

UMBC returns home to face Binghamton next Sunday at 1 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
