Swimming and Diving Falls to East Carolina in Regular Season Finale on Saturday

GREENVILLE, N.C. - In the regular season finale, the UMBC swimming and diving teams fell to the East Carolina Pirates on Saturday afternoon. The women fell by a score of 157-143, while the men fell 194-106.

 

Senior Alexander Gliese (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) followed up his record-breaking day against Howard on January 6 by breaking the Minges Natatorium record in the 200 back with a time of 1:48.15.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED - WOMEN:

Hania Moro (New Cairo, Egypt) was a two-time winner, taking first in the 1000 free (10:05.75) and 200 free (1:52.07). The senior also was runner-up in the 500 free, finishing in a time of 5:02.16.

Laura Massicotte (Quebec City, Quebec) earned first place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.18 and second in the 100 free with a time of 53.16.

 

Four other Retrievers finished in first or second place in their events for the women: Emily Vance (1st 200 back, 2:06.16; 2nd 100 back 58.43), Natalija Marin (1st 100 fly, 56.44; 2nd 200 fly, 2:03.71), Maddy Popalis (1st 100 breast, 1:06.03; 2nd 50 free, 24.53), and Natalie Davis (2nd 200 IM, 2:09.74; 2nd 200 back 2:07.11).

 

The women's 200 medley relay team of Vance, Popalis, Marin, and Massicotte finished second in a time of 1:46.71. The 400 free relay team of Tonia Papapertrou, Moro, Marin, and Popalis also took second in a time of 3:32.15.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED - MEN:

Gliese won two events, including his record-setting performance in the 200 back and the 100 back, where he touched in with a time of 50.00.

 

Sophomore Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) took first in the 1000 free with a time of 9:29.39. Wisner also was the runner-up in the 500 free, touching in with a time of 4:38.36.

 

Junior Ilia Rattsev (Moscow, Russia) finished second in both the 50 free (21.13) and 200 free (1:40.88). Jack Carlisle (Cape Town, South Africa) came in second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.87.

 

On the boards, Elijah Wright (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) finished first in the 1 meter dive with a score of 305.10. Ben Parker (Lawrenceville, Ga.) finished second in the 3 meter dive with a score of 307.13.

 

UP NEXT:

The Retrievers will next return to the pool February 14-17 as they compete at the America East Championship at WPI in Worcester, Mass.
