Retriever Men's Soccer Blanks Navy, 2-0 on Saturday

Annapolis, Md.— UMBC men's soccer picked up a convincing 2-0 win against the Midshipmen on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Cesare Marconi (Loano, Italy) and junior Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) each scored a goal and added an assist in the victory.

How We Got Here:

  • Navy had the first good opportunity, but freshman Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) made his first collegiate save to keep the match scoreless.
  • After the Midshipmen hit the crossbar on a shot, UMBC finally broke through with a goal in the 16th minute.
  • Pulliam headed home his second of the year off a cross from Cesare Marconi to put UMBC in front 1-0.
  • Navy had a couple of back-to-back chances late in the half, but the UMBC defense stood tall, keeping UMBC in front 1-0 at the break.
  • The Retrievers outshot the Midshipmen 6-5 in the opening 45 minutes, putting their only shot on goal in the back of the net.
  • UMBC came out firing with James Gielen (Edgewater, Md./DeMatha) and Marconi putting shots over the bar in the opening three minutes.
  • Marconi padded the lead with his third goal of the year in the 50th minute.
  • The sophomore transfer volleyed home a cross from Pulliam to give UMBC a 2-0 lead.
  • From there, the Retriever defense kept Navy at bay, picking up their fourth win of the year.

By The Numbers:

  • UMBC picked up their fourth win of the year, and their third shutout of the year.
  • The Retrievers outshot the Midshipmen 12-9, holding Navy to just one shot on goal.
  • UMBC moves to 4-1 on the year while Navy falls to 1-4-1.

Dawg Bites:

  • Quantrell Jones picked up his first collegiate win in his first start for the Retrievers needing just one save on Saturday.
  • Marconi leads the team with nine points on three goals and three assists. He has had a point in all but one game this year.
  • Pulliam now has two goals in 2018. He scored two all of last year, and now has eight in his career.

-UMBC will have the week off before heading to Kalamazoo to take on Western Michigan on Saturday, September 15. Kickoff with the Broncos is set for 12 p.m.
