Women's Soccer Falls at St. Francis on Thursday Night

LORETTO, Pa.  – The UMBC women's soccer team fell to the St. Francis Red Flash, 4-0, in a Thursday night contest. 

STRAIGHT FACTS

  • St. Francis put two good shots on goal in the eighth minute, with one being blocked and the other being saved by Leah Roth (Valencia, Pa.).  
  • Jess Hopkins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) placed a shot on goal in the 11th minute, but SFU's Julia Hernan was there to make the save. Three minutes, Hopkins sent another shot wide of the net.
  • After the Red Flash had another shot blocked, Roth made another save to keep the hosts out of the net.
  • St. Francis got on the board first in the 35th minute after reigning NEC Offensive Player of the Year Alyssa McGhee knocked in a shot into the top corner of the net.
  • Roth made one final save in the first half to keep the score at 1-0 before the intermission.
  • Elysia Paolillo (Worcester, Mass.) tried to tie the game up early in the second half, but Hernan was there to make the stop.
  • In the 57th minute, Roth made her fifth save of the game to keep SFU's lead at just 1-0. Paolillo then tried to get UMBC on the board with a shot, but Hernan was there to block it.
  • Two minutes later, Mariana Jaleca put the Red Flash ahead, 2-0, after she collected a pass from Leanna Choo.
  • The Red Flash added a third goal to the board in the 69th minute off the foot of Teresa Reid.
  • UMBC had good looks from Christina Corbi (Medford, N.J.), Amberlina Argubie (Gaitherburg, Md./Quince Orchard), and Olivia Paolucci (Gaitherburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) late in the game, but Hernan saved each shot that came towards her net.
  • Saint Francis added the final goal of the game after Alex Martinez scored in the 86th minute.

St. Francis moves to 1-1-1 on the season, while UMBC falls to 0-3-0.
