Retriever Baseball Heads South for Weekend Set with Florida Gulf Coast

Baltimore, Md.— UMBC baseball returns to action after a five day layoff which saw their midweek contests against Mount St. Mary's and Coppin State get cancelled due to winter weather in the Baltimore area. The Retrievers are fresh off a series win against Hartford to open America East play this past weekend and sit at 5-10, 2-1 AE on the year.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-The Retrievers enter the midweek at 5-10 after taking two of three from Hartford this past weekend. UMBC used a big offensive day on Sunday to take the rubber match, as the two split a double header on Saturday.

-Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) leads the team at the plate batting .258 3ith eight hits and five runs scored. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) leads the team in a number of offensive categories including hits (13), doubles (4), and RBI (9).

-On the hill, Chase Bailey (Fairfax, Va.) leads the rotation with a 4.22 ERA, going 1-2 in four starts. He has thrown the most innings at 21.1. Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) leads the bullpen with a 0.87 ERA, with four saves in eight appearances. He has surrendered just ten hits in 20.2 innings, striking out 30 batters

Scouting the Eagles:

-The Eagles come into the weekend set at 15-5 having won their last two contest. Most recently, FGCU took down FIU 13-6 on Tuesday.

-FGCU is batting .321 as a team, with Eric Gonzalez leading the way with a .387 batting average. Kohl Gilmore leads the team with seven home runs while Richie Garcia is batting .350 with a team best 28 hits and 24 RBI.

-On the hill, Josh Dye leads the rotation with a 1.74 ERA, sporting a 3-1 record in five starts this year. He has thrown a team best 31.0 innings with 29 strikeouts and just four walks.

All-Time Series:

-This will be the first meeting between Florida Gulf Coast and UMBC. The Retrievers have played just two ASUN schools in their history, going 6-1 against Stetson (1-0) and NJIT (5-1).

 

On Deck:

-UMBC will remain on the road with a midweek contest at George Mason on Wednesday, March 28. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. in Fairfax.
