Emmitsburg – Host Mount St. Mary's (1-3) broke open a close game early, scoring five first half straight goals and going on to a 16-7 victory over UMBC (1-2) in damp, chilly conditions at Waldron Family Stadium.

Sophomore attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) recorded his third career hat trick, while freshman attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) scored twice and added an assist for the Retrievers.

UMBC never led, but tied the score at 1-1 and 2-2 in the first quarter. Junior midfielder Jack Andrews (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) got the first equalizer with 8:01 to play in the stanza and Frawley converted a feed from junior middie Billy Nolan (Crofton, Md./Arundel) to knot the game again with 3:51 remaining.

But an unforced UMBC turnover led to Mount scoring with 1:21 to play in the first and that started the 5-0 surge by the hosts.

Trailing 7-2 at the break, UMBC came out quickly as the Frawley-Nolan combination clicked for a goal just 41 seconds into the third quarter. Another momentum swing occurred as UMBC won the face off, but an apparent Retriever goal was wiped out on a crease violation. Mount took possession and scored 2:10 into the period, starting a 3-0 run which gave the Mountaineers a 10-3 advantage.

Patschorke scored with 21 seconds left in the third quarter, but the explosive Mountaineers scored six times in the final stanza to capture the victory.

Mount's Stephano Mastro led all scorers with five goals and one assist.

The Retrievers had won all 23 previous meetings in the series.

UMBC returns to action on Saturday, March 3, when they travel across the beltway to take on Towson. Face-off time is scheduled for noon.
