BALTIMORE – Sophomore forward Brandon Horvath (West River, Md./Southern) scored 19 points and graduate student forward Joe Sherburne (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) added 15 as UMBC (7-6) defeated Hood (Md.) College, 86-65, at the UMBC Event Center.

Sherburne stuffed the stat sheet with nine rebounds and six assists, while red-shirt junior forward Sam Schwietz (Frisco, Texas) corralled a career-high 12 rebounds to spark the Retrievers.

The Blazers (7-4), members of the NCAA Division III Middle Atlantic Conference, played the game as an exhibition. They were paced by junior guard Michael Riley, who led all scorers with 21 points.

Riley hit a pair of treys in the game's opening sequence as Hood built a 14-9 lead. But UMBC would take the lead for good on a Ricky Council (Durham, N.C.) trey with 8:20 to play in the first half. The Retrievers would eventually build a 45-32 halftime advantage, outscoring the smaller Blazers, 17-3, in second chance points.

Hood would also control the early stages of the second half, slicing a 14-point deficit to 50-47 on a Mason Wang (14 points) trey at the 13:29 mark. But UMBC freshman guard R.J. Eytle-Rock (London, England) sparked a 10-3 run with a trey and traditional three-point play to restore the margin to double digits three minutes later.

UMBC would outscored Hood, 26-15, in the game's final ten minutes.

Horvath tied his career and season high in scoring for the second time in the last three games and contributed defensively with five rebounds and three blocked shots.

UMBC hit 32-of-66 shots (48.5 percent) from the floor and converted 13-of-37 attempts (35.1 percent) against Hood's zone defense. The Retrievers enjoyed a 42-32 rebounding advantage, with 13 of their 18 offensive caroms being hauled in by Schwietz (7) and Sherburne (6).

UMBC has its longest break of the season before heading to University Park, Pa. to take on Penn State on Saturday, Dec. 29. Tip-off time is slated for 1:00 p.m. with the broadcast on BTN+.
