Championship Bound: UMBC Men's Soccer Defeats No. 1 Stony Brook to Advance to the #AEMSOC Title Game

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y.-- Jordan Dove (Gambrill, Md./DeMatha) netted the game winner in the 60th minute to send UMBC men's soccer to their first America East Tournament Championship game since 2014 and sixth time in ten years. The Retrievers held the Seawolves to no shots on goal during the second half in the win.

How We Got Here:

  • The Retrievers had their first good looks in the 15th minute, with Patrick Jean-Gilles (Woodbridge, Va.) getting a shot blocked, and the follow up by Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) also deflecting off a Stony Brook defender.

  • UMBC applied pressure in the latter stages of the first half, with the best chance of the half coming off the foot of James Gielen (Edgewater, Md./DeMatha).

  • Gielen put a shot on target, but Seawolves keeper Christian Miesch was up to the task, making the stop.

  • Marshal MacCartney (Chesapeake, Va.) had a chance just before the break, but his shot sailed wide of the cage, as we went into the locker rooms scoreless.

  • Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) made one save on the only shot that went on target, with Stony Brook out-shooting UMBC 8-6 in the first 45 minutes.

  • Jordan Dove gave UMBC the lead in the 60th minute after a miscue by Miesch landed at the feet of Dove, the junior slotted it home.

  • Dove gets another good opportunity in the 76th minute. He was in alone on the keeper, but his attempt was denied to keep the score 1-0.

  • Stony Brook would threaten late, but the Retriever defense stood their ground, holding on for a 1-0 win and a trip to the championship game.

By The Numbers:

  • UMBC improves to 10-5-4 while Stony Brook finishes the season at 8-6-3.

  • The Seawolves outshot the Retrievers 15-13 and earned four corner kicks compared to the Retrievers three.

  • However, UMBC put three shots on goal, with the Seawolves getting just one on target.

  • Dove led the Retrievers with three shots, two on goal and scoring on one.

In Net:

  • Jones had one save on the only shot that went on net for his fifth shutout of the year, picking up his seventh win and moving to 7-1-2 on the year.

  • Christian Miesch picks up the loss, stopping two shots falling to 7-6-3 on the year.
