Men's Soccer Rallies From Two Down to Force 2-2 Draw vs. Stony Brook; Earn Five Seed in #AEMSOC Tournament

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y.-- UMBC men's soccer fell behind 2-0 early in the second half, but rallied for a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night against Stony Brook. Senior James Gielen (Edgewater, Md./DeMatha) and junior Nick Gumbs (Clarksburg, Md./Damascus) netted the Retriever goals. The Retrievers will be the five seed in the upcoming #AEMSOC Tournament, traveling to #4 Vermont on Saturday.

How We Got Here:

  • Jon Bell (Silver Spring, Md./Richard Montgomery) had the first good opportunity of the match, putting a rebound on target, but it was turned aside by Seawolves keeper Christian Miesch.

  • Bell found himself in good position just minutes later off a corner kick. He took the Matt Bailey service, but put the header high.

  • Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) makes a big save one-on-one to keep it scoreless in the 14th minute.

  • Cesare Marconi (Loano, Italy) chased down a loose ball in the corner and got a bending shot off, but it was blocked to keep it scoreless into the break.

  • Stony Brook outshot the Retrievers, 7-6 in the first half with both teams having a pair of chances on net.

  • Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) had the first good chance in the second half, getting on the receiving end of a Kyle Saunderson (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) throw in but his shot was stopped on the doorstep.

  • The Seawolves strike first just a minute later as Jarred Dass intercepted a bad pass and put it past Jones to give SBU a 1-0 lead.

  • Stony Brook put another on the board just minutes later on a Mark Irvine goal to make it 2-0.

  • After a penalty was called in the box, senior James Gielen cut the deficit in half, blasting the penalty kick in the bottom right corner to make it 2-1 in the 56th minute.

  • Nick Gumbs followed up just minutes later off a feed from Jordan Dove (Gambrills, Md./DeMatha) to tie the match with his second goal of the year.

  • UMBC controlled play the rest of the second half, but could not find the go-ahead goal as the match went to overtime.

  • Marconi had a chance just a minute into the extra frame, but could not get it past Miesch. He would have another chance in the second overtime, but the two sides battled to a 2-2 draw.
