Marconi Scores Late, UMBC Defeats Hartford 1-0 on #UMBCHomecoming

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.-- Sophomore forward Cesare Marconi (Loano, Italy) scored his team best fourth goal of the year when it counted most, propelling UMBC to a 1-0 win against Hartford on Saturday night. The Retrievers had several chances throughout the contest, but could not find the net in regulation.

How We Got Here:

  • Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) had the first good chance for either side in the 11th minute. He collected a cross from Colin Weyant (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall), but could not get enough on the shot.

  • Marconi and Matt Bailey (Stevensville, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) had back-to-back chances in the 26th minute, with both attempts needing to be turned away by Hartford keeper Jimmy Slayton.

  • The Retrievers outshot the Hawks 7-2 in the first 45 minutes, but neither side could find the net as the two went to the half scoreless.

  • Hartford nearly took the lead in the 56th minute, but the shot by Xahne Reid hit the crossbar and went out.

  • Weyant had the best Retriever chance in regulation just minutes later. He had the ball at his feet just six yards out after a beautiful Bailey feed, but he could not get the shot on target.

  • Both sides ended regulation without a goal, setting up the second straight overtime contest for the Retrievers.

  • It did not take long for UMBC to find the winner, as Marconi took the feed from James Gielen (Edgewater, Md./DeMatha) and slotted it home for the winner in the 94th minute.

By The Numbers:

  • UMBC outshot the Hawks 14-8 and 5-1 in shots on goal.

  • UMBC earned six corner kicks, surrendering just two on the night.

  • The Retrievers have given up just one goal in their three game unbeaten streak, and have gone the last 203:21 without giving up a goal.

  • A crowd of 2,113 were on hand to witness the win. That is good for eighth best all-time at Retriever Soccer Park.

In Net:

  • Freshman Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) earned his third win of the year, stopping the lone Hawk shot on net.

  • Jimmy Slayton earned the loss for Hartford, giving up one goal and making four saves.

Up Next:

  • The Retrievers will have a short turnaround, hosting Villanova on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Kickoff with the Wildcats is set for 7 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park. Tickets are available at tickets.umbc.edu.
