Women's Basketball Falls 81-51 to Binghamton on Wednesday

Vestal, N.Y.— UMBC women's basketball fell to Binghamton 81-51 on Wednesday night. Senior guard Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) led the way with 13 points.

The Retrievers fall to 2-18, 1-6 AE on the year while the Bearcats move to 13-7, 4-3 AE.

Castaldo had 13 points on 5-14 shooting, while freshman Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) chipped in ten points. Brittani Burgess (White Plains, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/VCU) added six points and eight rebounds.

Three Bearcats hit double figures led by Alyssa James with 22. She added 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Kai Moon (20 points) and Imani Watkins (19) hit double digits.

Both sides started the game shooting well, but an 8-0 Bearcat run gave them an early 12-4 lead. Brittani Burgess ended the run with back-to-back layups. Lakiah Sims (Riverdale, Ga./Charles Drew/Palm Beach State) drilled a three and Tyler Moore (Portsmouth, Va./Norfolk Academy) hit a layup to cut the deficit to two late. Moore struck again, hitting a three at the buzzer to give UMBC a 16-15 lead after one.

The Retrievers extended their run to 10-0 in the second to extend their lead to three early on. However, the Bearcats would hit back-to-back triples to spark an 8-0 run to take back the lead and push that to a 10-3 spurt to take their largest lead of the game to that point at 11. UMBC would keep it close, cutting the deficit to 37-31 at the half.

Janee'a Summers lead the charge with seven first half points on 3-6 shooting. Castaldo added seven in the opening ten minutes for the Retrievers who shot 48 percent from the floor.

The Bearcats started the second half on a 7-0 run, extending their lead to 13 early on. Castaldo stopped the run hitting a three and drawing the foul before knocking down another three on the following possession to cut the Binghamton lead to just seven. However, and 11-0 Bearcat run gave them the lead for good, taking a 59-40 lead after three.

Binghamton would outscore UMBC 22-11 in the fourth to take an 81-51 victory on Wednesday night. UMBC shot 29.7 percent from the floor while the Bearcats shot 48.3 percent.

UMBC concludes their two-game road swing at Maine on Sunday, Jan. 28. Tip-off with the Black Bears is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN 3.
