Box Score

Baltimore, Md.— UMBC women's basketball snapped a 13-game losing streak with a 66-54 victory against UMass Lowell on Saturday. Brittani Burgess (White Plains, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/VCU) scored a career high 16 points in the victory.

UMBC improves to 2-15, 1-3 AE on the year, while UMass Lowell falls to 3-13, 0-3 AE.

UMBC started the game with a Tyler Moore (Portsmouth, Va./Norfolk Academy) three before the River Hawks struck the first blow with a 9-0 run. The Retrievers answered a 6-0 spurt of their own to tie it at 9-9 after a Burgess fast break layup.

The Retrievers would continue to attack, ending the quarter with a 20-15 lead after Kristen Teklits (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) drilled a triple just before the buzzer. Burgess took the outlet from Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) and drove the length of the floor, finding Teklits in the corner for the three.

The second quarter opened the same way the first ended, as UMBC put the pedal to the metal on offense. Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) hit a pair of jumpers to give UMBC a six-point lead, holding UMass Lowell scoreless over a three-minute span. That run opened to an 11-0 spurt and ultimately a 14-3 to end the half, holding the River Hawks scoreless for over five minutes in the quarter.

Déjà vu struck to end the half, as Teklits beat the buzzer once more to send UMBC into halftime up 38-26. Burgess led the Retrievers with eight points on 4-6 shooting. Teklits had seven points on 2-3 shooting from three as UMBC shot 57.1 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent from deep forcing ten River Hawk turnovers.

The UMBC defense stood tall in the third, holding the River Hawks to just nine points, keeping them scoreless for a 4:50 minute stretch of the quarter. The Retrievers forced five turnovers in that span, going on a 7-0 scoring run. The Retrievers stretched their lead to 23 after a Teklits layup and a Costa and one to give them a 56-35 lead after three.

River Hawks open the quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the Retriever lead to 14, but a pair of Burgess free throws ends the run. The Retrievers would hold the River Hawks the rest of the way, taking a 66-54 victory on Saturday.

Burgess led the way with a career high 16 points on 7-11 shooting. Oliver and Costa each hit double figures, scoring 12 and 11 respectively. Oliver chipped in eight rebounds, while Costa grabbed six. UMBC shot 44.8 percent as a team, forcing 21 UMass Lowell turnovers.

UMBC returns to action against Hartford on Monday, Jan. 15 in Connecticut. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. on ESPN 3.
