UMBC Men's Soccer Falls, 2-0 to #12 Western Michigan on Saturday

Baltimore, Md.— UMBC men's soccer fell, 2-0 to #12 Western Michigan on Saturday night, as the Broncos got a first half goal, adding one in the second half in the win. UMBC was led by Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) and Cormac Noel (Todmorden, England) led the way with two shots each, as the Retrievers fall to 5-2-1 on the year.

The Retrievers came out and had a couple of early on. Senior midfielder Gregg Hauck out a header on target in the early going, but his attempt was saved. Cormac Noel followed up with a good chance of his own in the 17th minute after Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) fed a through ball to Noel in the box. However, his shot rang off the post to keep the game scoreless.

Western Michigan broke through seven minutes later, as Jay McIntosh took a ball from Tommy Clark and got around the Retriever defense to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead at the break.

The Broncos outshot the Retrievers in the first half, 4-2 garnering six corner kicks.

Western Michigan would add to their lead in the 60th minute. After freshman Ciaran O'Loughlin (Birkenhead, England) made a sprawling save on a shot, Brandon Bye collected the long rebound and placed it home to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead.

UMBC would threaten late, as Patrick Jean-Gilles (Woodbridge, Va./South County) put a free kick from 20 yards out just over the cross bar with 17 minutes left. Pulliam had a chance minutes later from 15 yards out, but his shot was blocked away as the Broncos held on for the victory.

The Retrievers earned just two corner kicks, with both coming in the second half. Western Michigan outshot the Retrievers 12-7. O'Loughlin made three saves for UMBC on the night.

UMBC returns to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 26 when the Retrievers host #3 Maryland at Retriever Soccer Park at 7 p.m.
