Worcester, Mass.—UMBC swimming and diving won every event on Thursday, to take an early lead in the America East Swimming and Diving Championships. The Retrievers broke two school records in the process, as they look for their third straight championship.
"We are so proud of the team and program. We have embraced the process all year, and now it is time to perform," head coach Chad Cradock said after day one. "Two school records is a great way to kick off the meet."
The Retrievers kicked off the meet with a school record in the 800 free relay, as Laura Massicotte, Alissa Caulfield, Hania Moro and Emily Escobedo touched in with a time of 7:17.82, four seconds better than the previous school best.
UMBC would not stop there as they ended the day with another school and meet record in the 200 medley relay. Escobedo teamed up with Lauren Day, Amanda Day and Haylee Committe to touch in a t 1:40.58.
Freshmen Devin Gromen and Abby Biddulph went one-two in the 1 meter dive. Gromen won the event with a score of 228.80, after earning the top seed after the prelims. Biddulph finished with silver with a score of 219.60.
Day two of the championships commences at 10 a.m. with prelims, followed by finals at 6 p.m. from WPI.
