Castaldo, Summers Score Nine; UMBC Falls on Road to Eastern Shore 66-43

Box Score

Princess Anne, Md.— Senior guard Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and freshman forward Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) each scored nine points in a 66-43 loss to Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday night. The Retrievers made a comeback in the third, but could not complete the effort, falling to 1-11 on the year.

The Retrievers came out the gates on fire, as Allison McGrath (South Park, Pa./South Park) hit six of her eight first half points in the opening two minutes of the game. The Hawks would have an answer for the run, racing out to a 14-9 lead before Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) hit an and one to cut it to two.

UMBC kept it close the rest of the first, but a Hawks layup just before the buzzer gave them a 24-17 lead after the first ten minutes.

Eastern Shore put the clamps down on defense in the second, going on a 6-0 run over a four-minute stretch to stretch their lead to 12 late in the half. Senior Laura Castaldo ended the run with a three, her first points of the game and first since Dec. 3 against Columbia. The New York native would beat the buzzer with three-point bank shot to cut the deficit to 34-27 at the half.

McGrath led the Retrievers with eight points in the first 20 minutes, as Castaldo added six and freshman Kristen Teklits (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) scored five. The Hawks outscored the Retrievers 14-4 in the paint, collecting 11 offensive rebounds.

The Hawks came out on fire in the third, scoring the first ten points of the quarter to extend their lead to 17 early on. UMBC answered back with a 5-0 spurt of their own thanks to a Teklits three and a Chukwuma Chiamaka (Lagos, Nigeria) jumper in the paint. However, the Hawks would have the final blow in the third, closing the period on a 6-0 run to take a 50-32 lead.

Eastern Shore would keep the Retrievers at bay the rest of the way, holding on for a 66-43 win on Thursday night.

Castaldo and Summers each finished with nine points, with Summers adding a team best five rebounds and one block. The Retrievers shot 29.8 percent from the floor, going 10-35 from three in the loss.

Bairesha Gill-Miles led all scorers with 19 points on 9-13 shooting with eight boards. The Hawks outscored the Retrievers 32-4 in the paint and 12-2 in second chance points.

The Retrievers will have off for the holidays before wrapping up non-conference play against Princeton on Saturday, Dec. 30. Tip-off with the Tigers is set for 4 p.m.
