Gliese Breaks Pool Records as UMBC Swims Past ODU on Saturday

NORFOLK, Va. – Junior Alexander Gliese (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) broke two JD Scrap Chandler Pool records as the UMBC Swimming and Diving teams defeated Old Dominion on Saturday, November 4. The men took a 164-133 win, while the ladies won by a score of 161-134.

 

Gliese's record-breaking performances came in the 100 and 200 back. He touched in the 100 back with a time of 50.47, while swimming the 200 back in a time of 1:49.60. Both times were also season-bests for Gliese.

 

Gliese, along with Kyle Paxton, Philip Adejumo, and Ilia Rattsev helped the men start the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, winning the race in a time of 1:31.94.

 

Rattsev also picked up first place wins in the 50 free (20.76), 100 free (season-best 45.54), and 200 free (1:41.11).

 

The Retrievers went 1-2 in the 100 fly with Adejumo touching in with a season-best time of 49.50, with freshman Jack Carlisle (Cape Town, South Africa) finished second in a personal-best time of 51.77. Adejumo and Carlisle also finished 1-2 in the 200 fly in 1:52.21 and 1:53.70, respectively.

 

In the 1000 free, freshman Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) touched in first with a season-best time of 9:29.87. Wisner also finished first in the 500 free with a time of 4:41.19, while junior Haythem Abdelkhalek (Ariana, Tunisia) finished second in a time of 4:46.86.

 

Senior Nikola Trajkovic (Zrenjanin, Serbia) had two season-best performances, placing first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.44 and second in 200 free with a time of 1:43.11.

 

On the boards, junior Leo Buoye (Spencerport, N.Y.) and sophomore Ben Parker (Lawrenceville, Ga.) finished second and third, respectively, in the 1 and 3 meter dives.

 

On the women's side, the team started out with a win in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:45.71 from the team of Emily Vance, Maddy Popalis, Natalija Marin, and Laura Massicotte.

 

Marin, Popalis, Vance, along with Hania Moro also posted a win in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:32.98.

 

In the 100 fly, Marin touched in first with a time of 56.30. Senior Allison Atkinson (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) finished second with a season-best time of 58.93, while junior Cassandra Willie (Stony Brook, N.Y.) touched in third with a time of 59.66.

 

Marin also finished first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:02.91.

Moro finished first in the 100 free (season-best 52.97), 200 free (1:52.75), and 500 free (5:04.99). Senior Carly Waters (Crownsville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) finished second in the 500 free with a season-best time of 5:12.80.

 

In the 1000 free, junior Britt Driscoll (Wallingford, Conn.) touched in first with a time of 10:40.71, while Waters came in second with a time of 10:43.49.

 

Vance came in first in a season-best time of 57.05 in the 100 back. Popalis finished the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.76.

 

On the boards, sophomore Devin Gromen (Crofton, Md./Arundel) finished first in the 1 meter dive with a score of 213.10, while sophomore Abby Biddulph (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) finished second with a score of 212.90.

 

In the 3 meter dive, Biddulph placed first with a score of 218.45, while Gromen finished third with a score of 182.65.

 

The Retrievers will return to the pool when they head to the George Mason Invitational on November 16-18.
