Retrievers Battle Back Against Albany, Fall in 4-2 in Penalty Shootout in #AEMSOC Quarterfinals

Box Score

Albany, N.Y.—The Retrievers saw their season end in a penalty shootout, 4-2 to fourth seeded Albany on Saturday afternoon. The Retrievers fell behind early, but battle back to force extra time off a Sammy Kahsai (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) goal in the 83rd minute to force overtime.

UMBC ends their season at 7-6-5 while Albany moves to 12-4-2 and will face No. 1 seed Vermont on Wednesday.

The Great Danes score early on to take a 1-0 lead, as Daniel Krutzen netted his fourth goal of the year with 27 minutes to go in the first half. He took a pass from Carlos Clark and slotted it past Ciaran O'Loughlin (Birkenhead, England) from the right side.

The Retrievers opened the second half with the run of play, outshooting the Great Danes 8-3 in the half. After a foul by Albany set up a Retriever free kick, Kahsai found himself with the ball on his foot 25 yards out. He calmly one-touched the ball past Danny Vitiello into the upper left corner to tie the match at 1-1 late.

In the first overtime, Tre McCalla (Toronto, Ontario) had the only chance, but had it blocked. Albany had the better of the chances in the second overtime. O'Loughlin made a save on Dominic Wooldridge, after he got caught outside the net after a blocked shot. Just minutes later, the Great Danes had a golden chance, but Afonso Pinheiro's attempt went off the crossbar and out, ending the game in a draw and forcing a shootout.

Albany went first in the shootout with Krutzen converting the kick. Kahsai went next but was stopped by Vitiello. Both Moosah Khanat and Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) made their shots in round two. After Albany missed in round three, Tom Paul (Stalybridge, Cheshire, England) came up, but just missed the mark, giving Albany a 2-1 lead. Both Albany and UMBC scored in round four with Patrick Jean-Gilles (Woodbridge, Va./South County) scoring for the Retrievers to keep the shootout going. However, the Great Danes won with a conversion by Pinheiro to move on to the semifinals.

UMBC outshot the Great Danes 14-11 with Cormac Noel (Todmorden, England) leading the team with four shots. O'Loughlin made five saves on the afternoon, making four in the second half and overtime.
