Volleyball Drops Match in Stony Brook Sunday Afternoon

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. – The UMBC Volleyball team (9-7, 1-1 AE) fell on Sunday afternoon at Stony Brook 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-19) in their second consecutive America East road game.

The Retrievers were led offensively by freshman Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's) and junior Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) with nine and eight kills respectively.  Junior libero Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) led the team with 17 digs, and classmate Krytsia Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez) recorded 28 assists.

The opening set began with both teams trading points, but Stony Brook (11-6, 2-0 AE) took control with an 8-2 run to give them a 15-8 lead.  The Retrievers received multiple kills from Freeman to keep the set close, but a 7-2 run would close out the set for the Seawolves.

UMBC got off to a hot start in the second set with a 7-2 run, featuring two kills from Freeman and one from senior Ashley Ramos (Orlando, Fl./Liberty/Monroe JC).  The Retrievers would hold onto the lead at 16-15, but Stony Brook would go on a 7-2 run to take a 22-18 advantage.  UMBC would battle back to make it a 23-21 set, but Stony Brook scored the final two points to take the set.

UMBC responded strongly to multiple Stony Brook runs throughout the third set, but were unable to take the lead in the set.

Emily Costello led Stony Brook offensively with a match-best 11 kills.

"The good news is that it is first poorly played match we have had this season. What is frustrating is that we emphasized how SBU would attack us and we just did not seem to be in sync with our defensive game plan," Head coach Ian Blanchard said on his team's performance after the match. "We will work hard to correct these mistakes throughout the week. There is a lot of volleyball left to be played and we will not let one bad performance to derail us."

The Retrievers will open up their conference home schedule on Friday against Binghamton at 7 p.m.
