BALTIMORE, Md. – UMBC swimming and diving closed out its home schedule on Saturday, as both the men and women took victories against CCSA foe Howard. The men won 119-110, while the women were 112-95 winners.
"We're excited about our progress, even though we were tired from our training trip," head coach Chad Craddock said after the meet. "It's always a pleasure to compete against Howard. And we're disappointed that Vermont could not be with us today, but we're keeping them in our thoughts."
On the men's side, the Retrievers took first place in both relays, starting the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Alexander Gliese, Luis Galvan, Philip Adejumo and Gregor Spoerlein finished the opening race with a time of 1:34.23. UMBC ended the meet with a win in the 400 free relay as Spoerlein, Nikola Trajkovic, Connor Ganley and Ahmed Wahby finished in 3:11.05.
Individually, Wahby and Spoerlein each won two races, along with Ilia Rattsev. Wahby won the 100 back with a time of 1:02.87 and the 100 free with a time of 47.53. Spoerlein took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.94 and the 100 fly, touching in with a time of 50.98. Rattsev took first in the 200 breast, touching in with a time of 2:05.24, and the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.65.
Freshman Haythem Abdelkhalek swept the distance free events, touching in with a time of 9:43.31 in the 1,000 free. In the 500 free, Abdelkhalek took first with a time of 4:44.73.
Other individual winners for the men included Gliese (200 back, 1:50.61), Jared Vance (100 breast, 59.15), Andrew McKissick (200 fly, 1:54.64) and Kyle Paxton (50 free, 21.88).
The UMBC women were led by Hania Moro, who took first in three events and was part of the winning 400 free relay. She took first in the 1,000 and 500 free with times of 10:16.72 and 5:04.99. Moro completed her day with a win in the 200 free, touching in with a time of 1:51.91. Moro anchored the 400 free relay with Emily Escobedo, Haylee Committe and Alyssa Caulfield, who finished in a time of 3:33.75.
Escobedo and Committe also took first in the 200 medley relay to start off the race with Lauren Day and Amanda Day with a time of 1:45.97. Escobedo finished first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.87, while Committe won the 100 free, touching in with a time of 52.88.
Emily Vance and Kayla Lilly were both double winners for the Retrievers. Vance took first in the 100 and 200 back, touching in with times of 57.32 and 2:04.33. Lilly won the 200 breast with a time of 2:23.13 and the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.15.
Other individual winners on the women's side included Lauren Day (50 free, 25.15), Amanda Day (100 fly, 58.90) and Cassandra Willie (200 fly, 2:10.56).
UMBC will return to the pool January 21 when they travel to East Carolina in the final meet before America East Championships.
