Softball falls to Morgan State, 6-1, Wednesday Afternoon

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.-- Junior Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) hit a solo home run, to give UMBC a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Morgan State rallied late to beat the Retrievers, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium.

Junior pitcher Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va/Atlee) cruised through the first five innings as UMBC (16-21) led 1-0 after five. Morgan State (9-20), however, exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth, thanks in part to two errors and a few costly walks, and UMBC could not rally.

The Retrievers could muster only two hits off of Lady Bears starter Amy Begg, the solo homer from Lane and a single by Danielle O'Neill (Lothian, Md./Southern) in the fifth. Begg finished the game with 10 strikeouts. Nicole Casagrand (Melbourne, Fla./Hatboro-Horsham) pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Retrievers.

UMBC returns to action when they host a three game series with America East rival Albany beginning with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
