Softball Splits with Brown on Wednesday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Baltimore, Md.—Four Retrievers had multi-hit games as the UMBC Softball team split a doubleheader with Ivy League foe Brown on Wednesday afternoon in Baltimore. The Retrievers took game one, 5-3 before falling 5-1 in game two.

Game 1

Sophomore centerfielder Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) gave UMBC (16-17) a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a double that drove in Jaclyn Buckley (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Camden Regional) and Jordan Sganga (Edgewater, Md./South River). Brown (11-8) would halve the lead on a solo homer in the third, but the Retrievers would push the advantage to three on a two run fielding error that scored Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) and Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional).

The Bears would get a couple runs, one unearned, in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3, but a throwing error on a Danielle O'Neill (Lothian, Md./Southern) fifth inning infield single allowed Jackson to score the Retrievers to go back up by two, 5-3. Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) got the last six Brown hitters in order to finish off the complete game and improve to 8-6 on the season. The junior lefty allowed three runs, two earned on ten hits, striking out three and walking none. Jackson finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a double, while Alexander and freshman Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) had two hits apiece.

Game 2

Brown pounded out five runs on seven hits in the first inning to take a lead they would not relinquish. Buckley had two hits for UMBC, including an RBI double in the second that scored Jackson and cut the deficit to 5-1. Bridget O'Malley (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) picked up her 150th career hit with a sixth inning single. Junior Nicole Casagrand (Melbourne, Fla./Hatboro-Horsham) took the loss and fell to 1-4 on the season.

UMBC returns to action this weekend at America East rival Binghamton, starting with a noon doubleheader on Saturday
