Darley Ties School Record with Eight Treys, But Top-Seeded Stony Brook Gets By UMBC, 86-76

Stony Brook, N.Y. – UMBC junior forward Will Darley (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) tied a school record by converting eight 3-point field goals, but the Retrievers were outscored, 27-9, from the charity stripe and dropped an 86-76 decision to top-seeded Stony Brook in the America East playoff quarter-final round at IFCU Arena.

Sophomore guard Jarius Lyles (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha) scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half and added a team-high 10 rebounds and six assists to complement Darley.

Darley scored a career-high 32 points.

Three-time America East Player of the Year Jameel Warney had a monster game for the Seawolves, scoring 27 points and adding 23 rebounds.

UMBC (7-25) was whistled for 31 fouls, tying a season-high and three Retriever post players fouled out . Stony Brook (24-6) had 50 opportunities from the line and converted 27, while UMBC was 9-of-17. The Retrievers, who employed a zone defense, entered the game with 70 more attempts at the line than their opponents.

Darley took over the contest at the 11:04 mark of the first half, hitting his initial trey to tie the game at 17-all. He scored 13 consecutive Retriever points and converted an amazing six consecutive threes to give UMBC a 43-35 lead with 3:45 to play in the stanza. But SBU rallied ,blanking UMBC in the final 3:45 and scored the final nine points of the half to take a 44-43 lead into the break.

The lead was exchanged 10 times early in the second half and UMBC had its final lead when sophomore guard Jourdan Grant (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Curley) hit one-of-two free throws to give the visitors a 62-61 with 10:30 remaining. But Warney, who amassed 10 offensive caroms, put back a Seawolf miss, starting a 6-0 SBU run, which gave the Seawolves a 67-62 lead at the 7:28 mark.

UMBC would not quit and Darley swished his final trey of the night to cut the deficit to 72-71 with 3:49 to play. Warney would score on the next two SBU possesions and the Retrievers could not rally down the stretch.

Darley hit 8 of his first ten treys and finished 8-of-12. Three other Retrievers have hit eight three's in a game, with Ray Barbosa accomplishing the feat last, on Dec. 29, 2007 at Ohio State.

Lyles set a school record by finishing the year with a 23.0 scoring average. Rick Moreland held the mark at 22.6 points per game in 1982-83.

UMBC hit nearly 59 percent from the floor in the first half, but faded down the stretch and finished at 49.1 percent, converting 28-of-57. The Retrievers were 11-of-22 from behind the arc, hitting a season-best 11 treys. SBU hit 57.8 percent from the floor and 7-of-13 from behind the arc.
