Loubatie Wins Three-Setter, But UMBC Falls at No. 44 SMU

Dallas, Texas – UMBC senior Eliott Loubatie (Paris, France) won his match at No. 4 singles versus 44th-ranked SMU, but the Mustangs improved to 13-4 overall with a 6-1 victory over the Retrievers.

UMBC fell in No. 3 doubles, but put up tough battles at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions. Seniors Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) and Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) were trailing just, 4-3, when their match as halted. Loubatie and senior Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) dropped a 6-3 decision at the No. 2 position and SMU took a 1-0 lead into singles competition.

The Mustangs captured considerable victories at the Nos. 5 and 6 singles slots, but Svard forged a tough fight at the No. 1 position. SMU's Nate Lammons prevailed, 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the match for the hosts.

However, after Loubatie split sets with Markus Kerner, the Retriever veteran gutted out a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 triumph. Drean also played a spirited match, but fell, 6-4, 7-5, to Samm Butler at the No. 3 hole.

UMBC takes on UT-Arlington in a double-header with the women's team on Thursday, March 17.
