Baltimore, Md.—UMBC women's basketball returns home to take on Maine on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. The Retrievers are coming off a 63-39 loss to Albany on Wednesday. Junior Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) led the way with 17 points and five assists in the loss.
Scouting the Retrievers:
-UMBC dropped a 63-39 decision to defending champion Albany on Wednesday. The Retrievers got a team best 17 points from Taylor McCarley, who was 7-14 from the field and dished out a team best five assists. Senior Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) chipped in 11 points and a team best seven rebounds in the loss.
-The Retrievers lead the America East and rank 15th in Division I in turnover margin (+5.18) and 31st in turnovers per game (19.7). McCarley ranks 14th in DI in free throw attempts (151), 22nd in free throws made (106) and 28th in assists (120).
-Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) (13.2 ppg) and McCarley (13.1 ppg) rank 10 and 11, respectively, in the America East in scoring. Wilson is chipping in a team-best 7.0 rebounds per contest, while McCarley is adding 5.5 assists and 2.8 steals, one of three players in all of Division I to do so. Sophomore guard Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) is shooting 33.6 percent from beyond the arc for 1.7 three-point field goals per game.
Scouting the Black Bears:
-Maine comes into the weekend tilt at 17-7, 8-1 AE on the year and are winners of their last five games. Most recently, Maine downed Vermont, 63-51 on Wednesday. The Black Bears got a game high 21 points from Sigi Koizar, who recorded her 1,000th point in the game. Senior Liz Wood chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds.
- Koizar and Wood lead the team with 16.7 and 10.2 points per game each. Koizar is averaging 3.9 boards per game, while Wood averages a team best 7.9. As a team, the Black Bears are shooting 42.2% from the field, while holding opponents to 39.4% shooting.
All-Time Series:
-Maine leads the all-time series 14-11, including wins in the last five. All-time at the RAC, the Retrievers hold a slim 7-5 advantage.
-In the most recent matchup, UMBC fell 65-55 up in Bangor on January 9. Garner led the Retrievers with 25 points on 10-19 shooting. McCarley and Pandora Wilson each added 11 points in the loss.
